Let's face it; writing can be scary, whether you are in the idea stage, or you've got the ideas and are stuck in the put-it-in-words stage, or you finally found the words but they look a mess.
Every writer needs all the juices they can get to help them break a leg with their writing, so we've got you.
Below are a few writing tips you can use to help you find writing ideas or to fix up your writing:
1. Use writing prompts.
Writing prompts are little cues that help you gain writing ideas; whether it's a word, a short sentence, a person, an image, an object, or a work of art. Anything at all that serves as a source of inspiration can be a prompt.
2. Keep a journal:
A diary or journal can give you the motivation you need to write. You can happen upon a story while writing simple day to day experiences, and you can spin a particularly interesting event into a story, or find a dialogue or a situation that can be added to an already existing plot for depth.
3. Start a blog on your interests.
It doesn't have to be anything major as long as there's someone willing to read it. By writing everyday, you are practicing and perfecting your writing.
4. Practice free writing.
Free writing is writing from your stream of consciousness without outlines, structures, rules and guidelines. It is simply giving your thoughts free rein. This can be very useful for coming up with new writing ideas, and for handling writer's block.
5. Pay attention to your senses and practice spontaneous writing.
What do you hear as you sit at your writing desk? A squeak? a throttle? Write spontaneously about what you hear, see, smell and feel. Feel free to use research as you write but ensure you see your writings through. This is a highly effective way to strengthen your writing ability, finetune your style, broaden your knowledge, and build your vocabulary.
6. Explore other writing styles and points of views
Sometimes a different angle might be the magic you need to sort out a drought or creative lethargy. Try switching up your writing style, do something different.
